Feminism for the Americas
The Making of an International Human Rights Movement
Marino's multinational and multilingual research yields a new narrative for the creation of global feminism. The leading women introduced here were forerunners in understanding the power relations at the heart of international affairs. Their drive to enshrine fundamental rights for women, children, and all people of the world stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when global thinking meets local action.

Starred review from February 1, 2019
Marino (history, Univ. of California, Los Angeles) tells the stories of six feminist activists from Latin America and the Caribbean whose contributions to the women's right's movement have been previously underexplored. With her insightful, well-researched work on Brazilian politician Bertha Lutz, Cuban writer Ofelia Domingez Navarro, Chilean author Marta Vergara, and American writer Doris Stevens, Marino provides a much-needed compendium to the narrative of feminism's history, addressing the ways in which personalities played a role in shaping the women's movement. She rightly argues that it's trickier to remember the work of individuals whose primary contributions happened through action rather than in printed books or theoretical work--an issue that has led to a privileging of white American and British feminist voices. VERDICT Marino's book would make a welcome addition to courses on feminist theory and women's roles in the Americas, and it should encourage scholars to dig deeper into the lives and works of feminists who were on the frontlines without necessarily publishing books or articles about feminism.--Emily Bowles, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison
