The gifted George Guidall has narrated all of Hillerman's work, and his expertise is clear even in this early installment in the author's Joe Leaphorn novels. When a Zuni boy is found dead and a Navajo boy goes missing, it's up to Leaphorn to uncover the dark forces at work. Guidall's calm cadence and intense pacing highlight both the plot's sinister underpinnings and the novel's stunning setting. Most importantly, Guidall's delivery echoes Hillerman's own careful work--Guidall's narration of the Navajo, Zuni, and even hippie characters captures the complex relationships and tension present in these communities.
