Celebrating the World's Iridescent Animals

ebook

Let yourself be dazzled by creatures around the world in this brilliant nonfiction picture book about iridescence.

Have you ever noticed the rainbow-like shimmer on certain bird feathers, insect bodies and animal scales? This effect, called iridescence, changes depending on the angle from which its viewed, and animals across the globe use the effect to both blend in and stand out.

In playful rhyming couplets, Time to Shine takes a closer look at these creatures and their sparkly "clothes," from the mallard duck's shining green flying "cap," which allows the birds to coordinate flight movements, to the reed frog's heat reflecting "vest," to the hummingbird's sequinned "costume," which helps to attract a mate. A secondary level of prose text on each spread gives further context for each animal's particular environment and adaptation.

Light seems to dance off of the book's vibrant pages, with illustrations that bring us up close and personal with animals both exotic and familiar to young readers. An author's note provides additional information about the science of iridescence.

Preschool-Grade 2 The natural world is filled with bright hues and intricate patterns, but it can also flash with a rainbow sheen. That marvelous effect, known as iridescence, is found on an incredible variety of creatures. Young readers are introduced to the general concept and shown specific examples of the effect in the skies, on the ground, and even underwater. A butterfly beams a brilliant blue, a beetle flashes to fluster a predator, a peacock spreads his tail to woo a mate, and a giant clam soaks up the sun to harvest energy. Every spread focuses on a different critter, each accompanied by a rhyming description and a scientific tidbit in smaller text. The striking geometric illustrations truly glow and glimmer on the page, seemingly catching each animal at their most brilliant. Intriguing endnotes offer a more in-depth scientific explanation of the phenomenon and even a mention of a recent iridescent dinosaur discovery. The combination of arresting visuals and engaging rhymes make this an ideal introduction to a shimmering subject.
